Everyone goes in free

  • The first Sunday of every month, with the Ministry of Culture's #domenicalmuseo.
  • 25 April, 2 June and 4 November: national free days at state museums since 2023.
  • 8 March, International Women's Day: free for women.
YearFirst Sundays

20273 January, 7 February, 7 March, 4 April, 2 May, 6 June, 4 July, 1 August, 5 September, 3 October, 7 November, 5 December

First Sundays are worked out from the Ministry's rule; the museum confirms each one shortly before (it did so for 1 November 2026 and 4 November 2026). Free days follow normal hours, 9am–7:30pm, last entry 6:30pm.

How free days work

  • No tickets can be booked online.
  • Everyone, individuals and groups, joins a single queue at the ticket office for a free, non-named ticket.
  • The usual route may be adjusted to the number of visitors.
  • The Passetto di Borgo cannot be visited on the first Sunday of the month.

Who never pays

  • Under-18s, any nationality; children under 12 must be accompanied.
  • Visitors with disabilities and one family member or carer.
  • ICOM members.
  • School teachers, with a certificate from their school on the Ministry of Education form.
  • Licensed EU tourist guides at work, and EU tourist interpreters working with them.
  • Teachers and students of architecture, heritage conservation, education sciences, archaeology and art history (EU), and of fine-arts academies, with proof of enrolment.
  • Ministry of Culture staff and journalists with proof of their work.

The Ministry's page lists every category; the ticket office checks who is entitled.

Nearly free

  • €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25, every day.
  • €5 on the first-Monday afternoons (€2 up to 25), until the end of 2026: opening hours.
  • €1 at the European Night of Museums and the European Heritage Days evening.

Free entry and the Passetto

For the Passetto di Borgo, free-entry rules cover only the castle ticket: the visit itself is paid (€12 for the daytime guided visit). Under-18s pay nothing according to the price lists, but a booking note on the same page says the visit costs €2 under 18 and is free only under 6.
