Unlike other state museums: while the Capitoline Museums and the Uffizi close on Mondays, Castel Sant'Angelo is open on Mondays too. It is the ideal choice for visitors whose only free day in Rome falls on a Monday.

Closure days in 2026

The museum closes on just two dates each year:

All other public holidays — 6 January, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 1 November, 8 December, 26 December, 31 December — see regular opening. Easter Sunday, Easter Monday and all Sundays are also open as normal.

Unscheduled closures can occur for institutional events, maintenance or security reasons. These are announced on the official museum portal a few days in advance. Always check before you travel.

Seasonal variations and extended hours

The 9:00–19:30 schedule is stable year-round. Variations you may encounter include:

When it is quietest: a crowd calendar

Based on observed visitor flows across different periods, here is the typical crowd level by time slot. Bear in mind these are average patterns — Italian public holidays and bridge weekends can shift them significantly.

Best days of the week

The golden hour: best time for terrace photos

The Angel's Terrace offers a 360° view of Rome. From April to October, the best light comes roughly one hour before sunset: the sun lights the dome of St Peter's directly from the front and the Tiber reflects a warm golden glow across the bridges.

Golden hour: when to arrive
PeriodAverage sunsetRecommended arrival
March–April~19:3017:30 (reach terrace by 18:00)
May–June~20:45Last entry is 18:30, so enter at 17:30 and stay on terrace until 19:15
July–August~20:30Same pattern: enter 17:30, terrace 18:30–19:15
September–October~19:00Enter 17:00, terrace 17:45–18:45
November–February~17:00Enter 14:30, terrace 15:30–16:30

Editor's note: the museum closes at 19:30 even in midsummer, so you will not see the actual sunset from inside. For the full sunset experience, you need to be outside the castle. The solution: visit the interior from 17:30 to 19:15, then step outside and walk across Ponte Sant'Angelo. The sunset over the bridge with the castle behind you is one of the most photographed scenes in Rome.

How long does the visit take? Plan your time

A thorough visit takes 2 hours. Here is the typical breakdown:

With a guided tour, the duration rises to 2.5–3 hours because the guide spends longer in the key rooms. For a quick "highlights only" visit (ramp + terrace + apartments), 75 minutes is sufficient.

Evening openings and special events

Castel Sant'Angelo hosts several special events with extended hours each year. The most regular ones:

Specific dates for the current year are published on the official museum portal and social channels.

The first Sunday of the month: free but plan ahead

The "Domenica al museo" (Museum Sunday) initiative makes entry free on the first Sunday of every month. For Castel Sant'Angelo this means:

Worth it if you are travelling on a tight budget, especially with a family. If you only have a few days in Rome and want to enjoy the castle at your own pace, paying for a ticket on a weekday is a better use of your time.

2026 calendar: dates to note

First Sundays of the month with free admission (standard hours):

Total closure dates: 1 January, 25 December.

Likely events to monitor (dates to be confirmed): Museum Night (Saturday 16 May 2026), Castel Sant'Angelo Estate opening (mid-June), Ferragosto night (15 August).

Frequently asked questions about opening hours

Is Castel Sant'Angelo open on Mondays?

Yes, it is open every Monday with standard hours 9:00–19:30. It is one of the few state museums in Rome that opens on Mondays.

What time does the ticket office close?

The physical ticket desk closes at 18:00. Online you can book slots up to about an hour before last entry (18:30).

Can I enter at 18:25?

Technically yes if you have a ticket, but you must leave by 19:30 — leaving you 65 minutes, enough for the highlights but not a thorough visit.

When are there late-night openings?

Only for special events (Museum Night, Castel Sant'Angelo Estate). Standard hours do not extend beyond 19:30.

Is Castel Sant'Angelo open on public holidays?

Yes, with the exception of 1 January and 25 December. Easter, Easter Monday, Ferragosto (15 August), 8 December and 26 December are all regular opening days.

Is it worth visiting in the rain?

Yes. 80% of the route is indoors. Only the courtyards and terrace are exposed. Entry queues can slow down slightly as bags take longer to check in wet weather.

How early before my slot should I arrive?

If you have booked online, arrive 10–15 minutes before your time slot. If buying on the day, allow at least 30 minutes for the ticket-office queue during high season.

How long does a quick visit take?

To see the terrace, ramp and papal apartments you need at least 75 minutes. A full visit including the prisons and all rooms takes 2 hours. Add 30–45 minutes for a guided tour.

Chosen your time slot? Lock it in before it goes — on weekends the best slots disappear within 24–48 hours.
